The brain on reproductive steroids
This presentation was delivered by Dr Rachael Sumner during Menstrual Health Week 2026 at the University of Auckland on Thursday 28 May, as part of the Menstrual Health Matters Symposium. Trigger Warning: This presentation discusses PMDD, suicidal ideation/attempt, mental health struggles, and themes of hopelessness. Please watch with care.
In her presentation, The Brain on Reproductive Steroids: Mental Health and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Dr Sumner explores how reproductive hormones – including progesterone and oestradiol – influence brain function and mental health throughout the menstrual cycle.
She also examines the latest understanding of brain changes associated with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) – a severe, cyclical mood disorder that remains widely misunderstood and under-recognised despite its significant impact.
This thought-provoking session highlights why greater awareness of PMDD matters, and how improved recognition can support earlier diagnosis, reduce stigma, and improve access to appropriate care and treatment.
